The Matarangi Ratepayers and Residents Association Inc (MRRAI) has been a cornerstone of the local community for many years. Formed by residents who care deeply about the place we call home, MRRAI exists to give a collective voice to the people of Matarangi and to help shape the future of our town in a positive, sustainable way.

We are entirely run by a team of passionate local volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to the wellbeing of the community. From advocating for infrastructure improvements to supporting environmental initiatives and public amenities, our work is driven by a shared commitment to preserving and enhancing the character and quality of life in Matarangi. MRRAI is funded solely through member subscriptions and operates as a charitable, not-for-profit organisation. We believe that by working together, with residents, local groups, and council bodies, we can help ensure Matarangi remains a vibrant, safe, and connected place for all.

Membership is open to all property owners and/or permanent residents.

We always welcome new members who want to contribute to the future of our community.

Chair

Mark Bedford

Born in Waitara, Taranaki, I attended Pharmacy School at CIT in Heretaunga, graduating in 1976.   I owned my first pharmacy in Silverstream and relocated to Tauranga in 1987, and built an integrated medical centre including a pharmacy which I have recently sold.

Now retired, and fully enjoying our favourite spot in paradise ( Matarangi) where we have had a holiday home for 25 years. My governance experience includes being on the Central Institute of Technology Council (13 years) Chair of Waipuna Hospice, Chair of Consumer NZ and recently Chair of The Pharmacy Council of NZ. I look forward to working with MRRAI and the committee to ensure that this wonderful place continues to prosper and has the necessary infrastructure to do that.

My wife, Diane, and I have six adult children who share our passion for Matarangi and are with us here frequently.

Deputy Chair

John Hackett

My wife, Ali, and I have been coming to Matarangi since 1993, and built our first beach house there in 1999.

All our three children, Kate, Jeremy & James and their children and pets, love Matarangi and continue to holiday here regularly.

I retired from my legal practice at the end of 2019. Subsequently, I was lured back into the legal world as a Consultant to promote and market my new firm’s services to my many contacts overseas.

Fortunately, a lot of this type of work can be done remotely from our beach house in Matarangi when the opportunity demands. Luckily, work doesn’t get in the way of the usual Matarangi activities: swimming, golfing, socialising, etc.

I have been on the MRRAI Committee now for around 5 years, and am committed to making Matarangi a great place to live and holiday at.

I’m also a Notary Public and am happy to provide notarial services to any MRRAI members free of charge when I’m here in residence.

My family and I have enjoyed holidaying in Matarangi since 2010. We love all that Matarangi has to offer, a beautiful beach, beautiful bush walks, great people and close enough to home to come down and enjoy a weekend!

I have been part of the MRRAI for the last 3 years and feel privileged to be part of a group committed to keeping Matarangi the very special place that it is today!

Treasurer

Jennifer Carran

I am originally from Tauranga where I worked in an accounting and investigative role for a Government Department.

My partner, Gary Capp, and our two girls had been camping in the Coromandel for a number of years and loved the place. In 2016 we purchased a section in Matarangi and commenced building our retirement dream in stages and coming here at every opportunity. I finally retired in 2021 and we moved here permanently in September 2021.

Over that time we have seen Matarangi grow considerably and have taken an interest in preserving Matarangi as the paradise it is. I am pleased to take on the role of Treasurer for the MRRAI where I can become actively involved in the community.

I moved to Matarangi in December 2004 after securing a job in Whitianga.  I had been living in Tauranga and holidaying in Matarangi and Wharekaho prior to moving here.  I have also lived in Kuaotunu and Coroglen.

Matarangi is my home and I want to see the best for it. I run a cleaning/property management business and own and run Matarangi Monitoring Services our local security business.

Please feel free to contact me with any issues that you think the Ratepayers association needs to know about and deal with or how we could better serve you.
