Please Help to Keep the SH25 Kūaotunu Speed Limits Down

NZTA’s public consultation on the Kūaotunu community SH25 speed limits is underway .  The consultation is open until the 3rd October.  If you haven’t submitted please do - details are in the email below.

We are delighted to announce that, as a direct result of the KRRA engagement and your overwhelming support, NZTA have opened a public consultation on whether they should reduce the speed limit from 70 km/h to 50 km/h throughout the length of Kūaotunu, from 200m south of Hilldale Crescent to 120m south of Cemetery Road.  (See below)

Following a 98% response to a KRRA survey earlier this year we know this is an important issue for our communities so it is very important that you have your say and tell NZTA what you think.

Please complete your NZTA submission, it could make all the difference in getting the outcome our community wants.  If you don’t tell them, the speed limits will not change.  You can complete your submission on the NZTA website by clicking on the link below.  It only takes about 5 minutes to complete.

The review runs from 22 August – 3 October 2025 is now live.  You can get more details on the speed limit review, including the ones at Wharekaho and Thames, by clicking on the link below:

Additional Comments

Under the “other comments about the proposal to reduce speeds” in your submission, some additional suggestions based on community input to the KRRA could be:

  • Install pedestrian crossings at Pumpkin Flat Road and opposite the Kūaotunu Domain.

  • Install speed cameras in the proposed 50 km/h stretch from Hilldale Crescent to Waitaia/Cemetery Rd to enforce speed limits and improve safety.

  • Build a safe footpath alongside SH25 for both western and eastern approaches to Kūaotunu Village for walking and cycling to further improve safety.

  • Boat trailer parking on SH25 roadsides at holiday periods leading to pedestrian and cycling conflict and safety issues still remains an issue.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support.  We hope this review will finally yield the speed reductions we as a Community have long sought.

Once again you can complete your submission on the NZTA website clicking below:
